Stargaze Tonight

Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 26, 2026

Stargaze Tonight is a free, ad-supported iPhone app that rates tonight’s stargazing conditions. This policy explains exactly what the app collects and what it does not. It matches the App Privacy declaration published on the App Store listing.

1. Who we are

Stargaze Tonight is developed and operated by an individual developer (“we”, “us”). The app is distributed on the Apple App Store under the bundle identifier com.devjihwan.starward.

Contact: jihwan114@hanmail.net

2. What we collect

CategoryWhatPurposeLinked to you?
IdentifiersAdvertising identifier (IDFA)Third-party advertisingNo
Usage dataAdvertising data, product interaction (screens opened, ad impressions and taps)Third-party advertising, analyticsNo
LocationCoarse location onlyApp functionality — computing observing conditions where you areNo

We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, contacts, photos, health data, financial data, or any account credentials. The app has no sign-in and no user accounts.

3. Location — coarse only, and rounded before it leaves the device

The app requests location access as “While Using the App” only. It never requests background or “Always” access.

Before your position is stored or sent anywhere, it is rounded to a 0.1° grid — roughly an 11 km cell. This rounded value is what the app uses to look up cloud forecasts and what it caches on the device. Your precise coordinates are never stored and never transmitted.

That is also why the App Store privacy label declares coarse location rather than precise location.

If you decline location access, the app still works. You pick a city from a list instead, and every feature behaves the same.

4. Third parties

We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with any party beyond the two services above.

5. Tracking and the ATT prompt

On first launch, iOS asks whether the app may track you across apps and websites (App Tracking Transparency). If you allow it, ads may be personalised using the advertising identifier. If you decline, the app requests non-personalised ads instead.

Declining changes nothing about what the app can do. Every feature — the condition verdict, the hourly darkness strip, the weekly forecast, saved observing sites, the star chart, notifications and the widget — behaves identically whether you allow tracking or not. You can change your choice at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.

The app also presents Google’s consent flow (UMP) where required by law, for example in the EEA and the UK.

6. Data retention

Your settings, saved observing sites and cached forecasts live on your device (and in the app group shared with the widget). Deleting the app deletes them. We operate no server and hold no copy of them.

Retention of advertising and analytics data by Google is governed by Google’s own policies, linked above.

7. Children

The app is rated 4+ because it contains no objectionable content. It is not directed to children and is not intended for use by children as its primary audience. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has provided data through the app, contact us and we will address it.

8. Your choices

If you are in the EEA, the UK, or a jurisdiction with comparable law, you may request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal data we hold. Since we operate no server, in practice this means data held by Google AdMob; we will help you direct such a request.

9. Changes

If this policy changes materially, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where the change affects what is collected, update the App Store privacy label to match before shipping the change.
